New Mexico Initiation

We have lived in Albuquerque now for only 5 months and we now feel that we have been initiated into the culture. Initiation here takes 5 steps. They do not have to happen in any order but these five things do have to happen before you can say you ever LIVED in Albuquerque. First, you must develop an obsession with green chiles and have eaten them with at least three different types of meals. Second, a homeless person must have confronted you not only for some change but also to use your cell phone (one also asked if I was a cage fighter, and said I had nice shoes). Third, you have to experience a car accident entirely due to the neglagence of the other driver. Fourth, personal posessions can mean nothing to you, otherwise you will miss them when they are surely stolen from your home. Fifth, you must have been caught in traffic at least once due to the filming of a new hollywood hit. The most recent show announced being filmed in New Mexico is called 'Wasteland That Was Once America' starring Denzel Washington. The film is meant to represent the not too near future and chose New Mexico for their best example. Beth and I had a good long laugh after seeing this ad. We love it here!

Ok, so Jake and I have experienced all the steps of NM initiation except for the car wreck, so guess we're not true New Mexicans yet, but I'm ok with that! Those are hilarious, and highly appropriate! I totally agree with them. Hey, we're headed to the temple this coming Saturday. Are you guys going to be around? Oh, and Bailey is way too cute!

That is excellent. Many people might think that you guys are kidding about the homeless people, but we know the truth! We have a few stories of our own about them. Oh New Mexico!
