Park(ing) Day 2009

For those of you who know what Park(ing) Day is, enjoy the pictures. For those who have yet to hear of this active phenomenon, read on. National Park(ing) Day was started in 2005 by Rebar, an art/activist/design group from San Francsco, CA. The idea is to turn a parking space into a public park for one day. It was started to promote more open space in urban centers but has become more of an exploration of the creative potential in urban infrastructure. Friday the 18th of September I organized a combination of two parking spaces; one on Route 66 next to UNM campus and one in downtown Albuquerque. I played a bigger role in building "Alice In Parking Land" than "Refuge" but both sites were a huge success. The week leading up to Park(ing) Day our apartment turned into a construction stage for all the props we used (painted doors, door stands, lashed tube fence, and synthetic turf scraps).

Bailey enjoyed playing in the park but Beth spent the whole time chasing her around to protect her from traffic. Not really a baby kind of park but still fun.
